About Sam Huston

Life Is Full Of Memories, Remember Them In Bronze

Born and raised in New Mexico, Sam Huston developed a deep appreciation for the people, traditions, and rugged landscapes of the American West from an early age. Growing up surrounded by rodeo culture, the outdoors, and helping friends gather cattle for local brandings, he gained firsthand experiences that would later become the foundation of his artwork.

As a young man, Sam competed in amateur and professional rodeos throughout the Southwest, taking on bulls and bareback horses with the grit and determination that defined western competition. During those same years, he also competed as an amateur and professional boxer, experiences that further shaped the toughness, discipline, and resilience reflected throughout his work today.

While traveling the rodeo circuit, Sam began sculpting clay figurines of bareback riders, saddle bronc riders, and bull riders. He sold many of these handmade pieces at rodeos to help cover his entry fees — unknowingly laying the groundwork for what would become a lifelong career in western art.

His sculptures quickly gained recognition within the rodeo community for their authenticity and movement, eventually leading to commissions for the New Mexico Rodeo Association Finals, where he created custom awards honoring champions across each rodeo event.

Early in his artistic journey, Sam sought guidance from Wes Smith. Wes bluntly told him his first pieces “were crap,” but also took the time to teach him the importance of proper armatures and structure in sculpture work. Taking that advice to heart, Sam continued refining his craft and later created an elk sculpture that impressed Wes. Seeing Sam’s growth and potential, Wes encouraged him to have his sculptures bronzed in Lubbock, Texas — a pivotal moment that helped launch Sam’s transition into professional bronze sculpture.

In the 1980s, Sam expanded his work into western bronze sculpture, combining his firsthand rodeo experience with a natural gift for storytelling through art. His sculptures capture movement, emotion, strength, and the enduring spirit of the American West. Drawing inspiration from rodeo life, wildlife, horses, hunting, and everyday western traditions, his work reflects authentic moments shaped by lived experience rather than observation alone.

Many of Sam’s sculptures are inspired by personal moments with his children and reflect themes of family, heritage, and the passing of western traditions from one generation to the next.

An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Sam continues to spend much of his time in the mountains and open country of the Southwest, where he finds inspiration for future pieces. He is also the proud father of two children, whose influence and spirit can be found throughout many of his sculptures.

Through his work, Sam Huston honors the heritage, resilience, and heart of the American West.
